Attention Georgetown Law Students: apply to be one of Georgetown Law’s Salzburg Cutler Global Fellows
Georgetown is now accepting applications for the 2018 Salzburg Lloyd N. Cutler Fellows Program. A total of five Georgetown Law students will be selected to participate from the 2L, 3L and LL.M. classes. The deadline for applications is December 19th, 2017.
The Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program brings together 55 law students from the nation’s top 11 international law programs to interact with leading academics, judges, and practitioners in the fields of private and public international law. The program examines the most critical issues shaping today’s international law agenda and creates a network of men and women interested in careers in international practice, scholarship, and public service.
At the heart of the program is the preparation by each Fellow of a paper, to be submitted in a five-to-eight-page executive-summary form by January 15, 2018, for review by the other participants and a group of outstanding law professors, judges and practitioners at the seminar itself on February 23-24 in Washington, DC.
- Day 1: Small group sessions consider each student paper, discussing and making suggestions to improve it. Short talks, panels, and networking opportunities are interspersed, featuring some of the most outstanding lawyers in the world. A dinner for fellows and faculty will be held Friday evening.
- Day 2: The morning is devoted to “looking beyond Law School.” The program will adjourn at noon.
What Is the Cost? There is no cost to participating Georgetown Law students. Georgetown will cover the cost of transportation and up to two nights of accommodation in Washington, DC. Meals will be provided by the Salzburg Global Seminar.
Who Can Apply? This program is open to 2L, 3L, and LL.M. students. Students with strong international backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. Georgetown will select five Cutler Fellows.
How Do I Apply? Please submit the following documents to the Institute of International Economic Law [email@example.com] not later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19th, 2017:
1) Cover letter explaining your background and interest in the Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program;
2) Unofficial transcript;
3) Resume or CV;
4) Two-page abstract describing the research topic/paper you would present in breakout sessions at the Cutler Seminar. Abstracts should outline an issue or question in international law that will be developed into a research paper, journal note, or other publication. Abstracts should generally fit in one of these major areas: i) humanitarian law, human rights, and use of force; ii) international economic, investment, and monetary law; iii) international trade, anti-corruption, and anti-trust; iv) international institutions and international relations; and v) rule of law and comparative constitutionalism. Students are encouraged to submit abstracts based on articles or papers in development for other purposes – e.g. seminar, independent study, law review.
Questions? Please contact Christine Washington, IIEL’s Director of Programs & External Affairs. Former Salzburg Cutler Fellow Mario Osorio Hernandez is also available to answer student questions about his experience with the program.
IIEL congratulates Georgetown’s 2017 Salzburg Cutler Fellows, and wishes all participating students in the 2018 program the very best of luck!
